NOTE

IPBIX - Install Files.pngt is important that the appropriate version of Power BI Desktop application is used. If Power BI content is going to be shared through Enterprise One Power BI Tiles then the report content must be created using a specific version of Power BI Desktop. This is to ensure compatibility with the Power BI Server version used in the PVCLOUD Power BI Service. Click the box to the right to download the Power BI Desktop application from Microsoft. Install and open the Power BI Desktop application before creating content that will be used in Enterprise One tiles.

Currently Supported Version of Power BI Desktop: May 2021

Note: The PBIDesktopRS_x64.msi installer file is larger than 300 MB. Please be patient!

The Microsoft Power BI Desktop application enables analytics and report designers to customize data sources and create datasets, models, and reports to share with others in the cloud or in the local environment. Power BI Desktop provides more functionality than the cloud-based Power BI service; for a comparison, see How Can I Use Power BI with Planview Enterprise One?.

You can download the Power BI Desktop from Microsoft's Power BI website.

With Power BI Desktop, you can connect to Planview Enterprise One data using a Planview Enterprise One content pack or using an OData feed. Content packs allow you to connect to fixed datasets only; see Connecting to a Planview Content Pack for Power BI for more information. To create or modify datasets from customized data sources, connect to Planview Enterprise One – PRM using an OData feed as described in the following procedure.

NOTES

You can access SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) datasets with no parameters (other than the user name parameter) with the Planview Enterprise One – PRM OData feed.
The OData feed automatically updates SSRS datasets. Tabular models, however, only refresh when scheduled by a Planview Enterprise One – PRM job stream.

To connect to data with Power BI Desktop with an OData feed:

1. Launch the Power BI Desktop application.
2. On the startup screen or in the External Data group on the Home tab, click Get Data or Recent Sources.

    NOTE
If you are connecting for the first time, Recent Sources is not populated.

3. Select the data source you want to use (such as OData Feed), then click Connect. 4. Enter the URL for the OData feed. The format should be similar to the following example:
https://customer.pvcloud.com/odataservice/odataservice.svc
If the authentication screen does not appear and your password has changed or you want to sign in as a different user, perform the following steps to delete any existing connections for the OData feed:

a. Click the file icon in the top left corner, then click Options and settings > Data source settings.
b. Click Data sources in current file.
c. Click Clear Permissions, then click Delete when prompted.
d. Click Close and return to step 2.

5.On the OData feed screen, click Basic in the left pane as the authentication method to use.
6. Sign in to Power BI using one of the following methods:

  • If you are using an authentication token, such as for Single Sign-On (SSO), enter your authentication token in the Username box; leave the Password box blank.
  • If you are not using an authentication token, perform the following steps:
a. In the Username box, enter the name of the Planview Enterprise One – PRM database you want to use and your user name in the following format: databasename\username
b. Enter your Password.

7. If necessary, select one of the two URLs listed on the screen. Both URLs will provide the same functionality and data with the OData feed. 8. Click Connect.
After connecting, Power BI Desktop lists the following data sources based on your user's grants and access:

  • SSRS datasets that do not contain parameters (other than the user name parameter)
  • Tabular models

9. Select the data sources you want to use and click Load.

You can now customize your data sources to create or modify datasets, create or modify reports, and share the results with others. For example, you can upload your dataset's .pbix file to the cloud-based Power BI service.
